Chapter 36

Zyra sat on Ryan’s lap, chuckling softly as he fed her strawberries from a bowl. They had slept in after a long night of consolatory lovemaking. It had taken a while for her to get over what Ryan had done to her the day before, but she was feeling comfortable with him again. After they woke up and showered together, Ryan surprised her by having Madam Zorri send a delivery of strawberries along with a bowl of fresh whipped cream. She’d bit into one of the delicious fruits, savoring the slightly tart but sweet juice inside them. The berry exploded in her mouth, releasing its sugary goodness. She had to wipe the corner of her lips to keep the juice from dribbling down her chin.

Zyra carefully chewed, then swallowed the piece of berry she had in her mouth, salivating for more. She leaned forward to take a bite out of another strawberry that Ryan dangled in front of her and giggled when he playfully pulled the fruit away, leaving her mouth gaping wide.

“You never change, do you?”

Zyra and Ryan spun their heads to see the familiar woman staring at them from across the living room.

“Allie?” Ryan’s voice cracked. “I didn’t think you were coming back so soon.”

Allie’s stare was sharp enough to cut through stone. “I never left the station, Ryan.”

The room grew uncomfortably silent as her words sank in.

“Is this some kind of joke?” Ryan asked, looking puzzled.

“If it is, the joke’s been played on me.” Allie crossed the threshold of the kitchen and waded into the living room to get a better look at Ryan and Zyra.

Zyra watched the wide swing of Allie’s hips as she approached, a flutter growing in her belly when she remembered the steamy night they’d shared.

“Allie, honey…” Ryan pushed Zyra off of his lap and rose suddenly from the sofa. “This isn’t what you think.”

“It isn’t?” Allie glanced at Ryan’s boxer briefs, knowing his unmistakable excitement wasn’t for her. “You really don’t think much of me, do you?”

“Zyra was just passing through,” he said, sending a pitiful glance in Zyra’s direction.

Allie looked Zyra up and down with disgust.

Zyra couldn’t look Allie in the face. She lowered her head and laid her bare feet square on the carpet.

“To think I slept with you.”

Ryan looked at Zyra and then back at Allie.

“You slept with her?” Ryan sounded almost as impressed as he was surprised, making Allie’s face even darker.

“Don’t act surprised,” she said with a sneer. “You’ve been laying up with every woman who looks your way. You didn’t think a little payback was coming?”

“Zyra.” Ryan cleared his throat awkwardly and turned to look at her. “Why didn’t you tell me you knew Allie?”

Zyra didn’t reply. She sat motionlessly on the sofa, refusing to raise her eyes.

“You know,” Allie’s voice began to shake, “it really hurt me when I found out you were fucking her. How could you do that to me? Walk around the station with her like that?”

“Allie…”

“All I wanted was for you to come home to me, Ryan.
